What is Google+ and Why Should I Use It?

What is Google+?

Google+ is a social network launched by Google in 2011. Initially it received widespread criticism, much of which slating the company for creating a Facebook clone. Despite this, Google+ is now the second largest social network in the world; larger than Twitter even.

What’s the connection?

Google have integrated Google+ into their search engine’s core. This means they can set a higher precedence to content from Google+ than from other social networks. Google’s search engine will also link users’ profiles and company pages directly into its search results as well as allowing users to link to their website and other social networks. This has the end result of entailing Google to understand the bigger picture of your entire online presence, improving your SEO rankings.

What is SEO?

SEO stands for ‘Search Engine Optimisation’ and essentially it defines how easily your website can be found through online search engines, such as Google, Yahoo and Microsoft’s Bing (no-one really talks about Bing!). Having good SEO is completely free and means you will drive more traffic to your website. For more information on SEO, read our article SEO – The Truth About Your Search Rankings.

How Should I Use Google+?

Like any social network, there are do’s and don’ts for posting on Google+. Take a look at our article 8 Steps to Starting Your Social Media Campaign for more advice on the sort of content that could work well for your business.

With all this in mind, any business with engaging content on their Google+ page is more likely to appear higher up in people’s search results, meaning more traffic to your company website and hopefully an increase in sales.

So in summary, Google+ is the dark-horse of social networks. Despite its size, it is a relative unknown and maximising its potential now will pay dividends as you increase your SEO, traffic to your website and user-engagement with your brand.
